on her shoulder, is mounted on a pilaster. (Restored : Hermaphrodites' nose, right hand,<br />

phallos ; Eros' right fore-arm ; the herm's beard and phallds ; Artemis' head ; the fawn's<br />

head.) The background represents a prec<strong>in</strong>ct-wall, above which we see <strong>in</strong> the centre an<br />

<strong>ancient</strong> oak with a band tw<strong>in</strong>ed about its trunk, to the right an Ionic column with a<br />

burn<strong>in</strong>g torch tied to its shaft and a vase set on its capital, to the left a circular pillar-<br />

shr<strong>in</strong>e with Ionic columns, w<strong>in</strong>dows, entablature, second row of w<strong>in</strong>dows, and battle-<br />

ments, the shr<strong>in</strong>e enclos<strong>in</strong>g a Diana-pillar with two torches bound to it.<br />
