pillar of <strong>Zeus</strong> Storpdos (fig. 781)-, whose<br />

appellative denotes the god 'of the Lightn<strong>in</strong>g-<br />

flash I'<br />

Another form of the same title was Astrapatos,<br />

applied to <strong>Zeus</strong> both <strong>in</strong> literature^ and <strong>in</strong> cult.<br />

His worship is attested for Bithynia by <strong>in</strong>scrip-<br />

tions of the second century A.D.' At Antandros<br />

<strong>in</strong> Mysia he had a festival last<strong>in</strong>g more days than<br />

one". At Athens there was a hearth {esclidrd) of<br />

<strong>Zeus</strong> Astrapatos on the city wall between the<br />

Pythion and the Olympion : here, for three days<br />

and nights <strong>in</strong> each of three successive months,<br />

the Pythaistai watched a place near Phyle<br />

known as the Chariot {Hdrma); if they saw<br />

a flash of lightn<strong>in</strong>g above it, they had to send<br />

a certa<strong>in</strong> sacrifice to Delphoi". The custom must<br />
