Secondly, the two faces of the bifrontal deity are often differ-<br />

entiated. And this differentiation may vary much <strong>in</strong> its degree.<br />

Boreas, as we have just seen\ had two bearded profiles, one dark,<br />

the other light. Argos on the kratcr from Ruvo- and lanus (?)<br />

on the Roman sard^ jo<strong>in</strong>ed a bearded to a beardless visage. The<br />

result was a piquant contrast, which acquired a certa<strong>in</strong> popularity.<br />

Thus a double herm to be seen <strong>in</strong> the Museo Capitol<strong>in</strong>o at Rome-*<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>es a bearded with a beardless Dionysos. Another, a work of<br />

Augustan date now <strong>in</strong> the Vatican, l<strong>in</strong>ks a would-be archaic with<br />

a Hellenistic head of Silenos (fig. 295)^ Or ag^a<strong>in</strong>, agam, two heads are<br />
