Even the late Roman emperors <strong>in</strong>herited the same tradition and<br />

viewed themselves as the viceroys of lupiter Capitol<strong>in</strong>us^. Hence the<br />

comparison of the Germanic with the classical column is not far-<br />

fetched or unreal. The smooth variety of the former support<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

figure of lupiter Optimus Alax<strong>in</strong>ms- may fairly be regarded as analogous<br />

to the column of Anton<strong>in</strong>us Pius-', a pla<strong>in</strong> granite shaft, on which<br />

stood the div<strong>in</strong>ised emperor, optimus max<strong>in</strong>msque pr<strong>in</strong>ceps'^, hold<strong>in</strong>g<br />

— if co<strong>in</strong>s can be trusted—the eagle and sceptre (figs. (y6— GjY of<br />

lupiter. Aga<strong>in</strong>, monuments like that of Mogontiacum" showed the<br />

possibilities of columnar relief and furnished a start<strong>in</strong>g-po<strong>in</strong>t for yet<br />
