Compiling a super directory is not difficult, only time-consuming. After making sure that
your directory includes all the worthwhile links on existing directories, you could search the
web using the resources and techniques described in this manual.
Compiling a directory for users in your field would be an "event" worthy of an
announcement in appropriate news groups and announcement locations. Maintaining and
enhancing it would also justify ongoing announcements and interactions with online
communities.
Worksheet for Compiling Your Own Directory
1.Create the web page off your home page for the directory. Assign a title and include
meta tags to improve its standing in searches (Exercise 2-1).
2.Visit each of the super directories found in Exercise 5-2. Some of these will lead you to
more directories.
3.Combine the directory into one "mega" super directory on your new web page.
4.Visit each site listed. Delete those in which the link doesn’t work or are totally devoid of
any content that would be worthwhile to target audiences.
5.Note where you would like a link to your site
6.Notify each remaining site that it is listed in your directory. Describe your plans for
promoting the directory and how it will benefit the site.
7.Ask for a reciprocal link to your site. Provide the necessary text and graphics with a
recommendation for where you would like the link.
8.Visited the resources listed in this lesson and in Appendix B. Look for more sites to add
to your directory.
9.Conduct keyword searches for more sites in major search engines.
10.Register your directory in search engines (Lesson 2).
11.Announce your super directory in newsgroups and mailing lists. Ask for more
worthwhile sites to list.
12.Contact each new addition to provide a reciprocal link.
