Relevancy/Evaluation
Exercise 7-3 -- Planning to Participate in Selected Groups
Now that you’ve selected which groups you want to participate in, the next step is to plan
just how you are going to participate. Don’t be in a hurry to jump right in without a plan of
attack first. Too much is at stake to risk offending members with an indiscrete posting,
such as one too blatantly self-promotional. You might find it difficult and involve a
lengthy "rehabilitation" process to undo the damage caused. Remember, Internet users
are a touchy bunch. They don’t like their time and sense of "Netiquette" to be usurped by
insensitive newcomers to the group. That’s why it’s important that you quickly become a
respected member.
Reviewing Acceptable Postings to Discussion Groups
To help plan your participation campaign, review these acceptable types of postings:
Ask a question: One of the nifty things about posting a question in a discussion
group is that you are getting information you desire while simultaneously promoting
your web site. The self-promotion comes subtly in the body of the posting and/or in
your attached signature. Just make sure you don’t ask too stupid of a question, or
one that has been recently answered. The group members won’t like that and may
have some chiding remarks for you. This is one reason why it’s a good idea to monitor a
mailing list a week or so before posting a message.
Answer a question: Answering a question provides an opportunity to contribute something
meaningful to the group and demonstrate your knowledge while promoting your web site
at the same time. Answering a question is such a good reason to post, consider
researching the answer to a posted question just so you can post the answer. Taking that a
step further: put together a report or white paper dealing with the subject of the question.
Then post a reply inviting members to view the report at your web site. The increase in
traffic is accompanied by an increase in the information content of your web site.
