Discussion Groups Are Excellent Sources
Newsgroups and mailing lists are probably the best sources for your information library.
Not only do you get experts (bona fide and otherwise) describing their insight and
experience, but you can actually manipulate the discussion (in relevant groups, of course)
around to subjects in which you want to know more information.
The best way to capture and organize discussion group information is to copy informative
messages into a simple database that you can create in a word processing, spreadsheet or
database application. Arrange the messages by subject into as many folders or directories as
necessary to keep the information organized and readily accessible.
Publishing Your Library at Your Web Site
Eventually you may want to consider preparing and publishing reports, FAQs, or white
papers based on information in your library. Supplement library resources with research at
other locations to produce an original, valuable publication on a subject that interests target
audiences. Then announce in discussion groups and at announcement sites that the free
publication has been added to you web site. Watch traffic to your web site jump.
Eventually, you will have an extensive library of self-published reports, each worth
publicizing.
Note: Researching multiple subjects is important, not copying or plagiarizing. Stealing
somebody else’s work is illegal and unethical. Besides, with today’s powerful search
engines like AltaVista, plagiarizers are easy to find. Just type in a phrase from the
original work with quotation marks around it. A list of where the work is published
appears.
An advantage to publishing your own reports rather than linking to other sites is that visitors
stay at your site rather than follow a link to another site from which they may not return.
However you should supplement your reports with links to content-rich web sites. The
combination of your reports and links to worthwhile sites will keep many visitors coming
back repeatedly.
