A popular option for banner ad placement is to purchase a key word at a search engine.<br />

Every time a user searches on that key word your banner ad pops up. The effectiveness of<br />

buying a key word depends how applicable your key word is to your target audience.<br />

Chances are however that there are not many good key words left at the major search<br />

engines. Only the majors attract enough traffic to do you much good. Buying key words has<br />

been popular for web advertisers for some time now so many of the favorable situations<br />

have already been taken.<br />

That doesn’t mean that you should rule it out. It may still be practical if you can find out<br />

from a search engine how many times a particular key words was searched over a month’s<br />

time. To give you a better idea of its potential, a URL lists the top 200 keywords searched at<br />

Yahoo!: http://www.eyescream.com/yahootop200.html<br />

The advantage of buying a key word is that you are able to pinpoint the target audience. A<br />

directory like Yahoo! might charge double the amount per impression for keywords than<br />

the normal CPM for banner ads on category pages<br />

Another option is to track which keywords drive traffic to your site from search engines<br />

where you have a favorable ranking. Buy those keywords in other search engines where<br />

your ranking isn’t as favorable and isn’t driving significant traffic your way.<br />

Another option to consider is to buy keywords at secondary search engines, such as other<br />
