The web is getting so vast, it’s often difficult to get manageable results in general search engines
no matter what techniques you use. Consider for your next search specialized engines that index
or catalog sites relating to a specific topic. They are more apt to be up to date and all-inclusive for
the specific topic in which you are interested.
Several of the major search engines conveniently provide lists of searchable databases:
C/Net’s search.com.
The Internet Sleuth.
All-In-One-Search Page
Suppose you have to find specialized search engines on your own. Here are a few tips for finding
them:
Search on topical key words plus ‘directory’, ‘catalog’, ‘search’ or other key words likely
to find search engines.
Look for them at the super directories found in Exercise 5-2.
Ask in related discussion groups (Exercise 7-1).
Scan the list of search engines approached by automatic registration services (Exercise
2-5).
After a few searches, you’ll soon find which specialized search engines are the best and how they
compare with the larger general search engines.
Searching Newgroups
Too often searches concentrate on the Web and overlook newsgroups. This is a mistake.
Newsgroups contain a wealth of information, often more current than what you find in web
searches.
Although several of the major search engines allow you to search usenets newsgroups, probably
the best search location is Deja News. Long after articles have expired on newsservers, Deja
News retains them indefinitely.
