Watch Out for Flames
When you announce in many discussion groups, particularly narrow interest groups, you
run the risk of generating hostile emails, called "flames". A few is to be expected but certain
steps you can take will help prevent the negative reaction from getting out of hand:
Identify how the reader benefits from the event being announced
Tailor your announcement for the group
Offer something of value for free
Offer a report, FAQ or white paper
Avoid sending the same announcement to many different interest groups at once
(called "cross-posting")
Steps for Writing the Announcement Body
1.Writing the Hook: Practice writing several hooks until you have several that grabs
readers’ interest and propels them to continue reading. Often you will want to build on the
thought expressed in the subject line.
2.Description: Explain enough about the event so that the reader has a clear idea what he
or she will find when they visit your web site. Draft three different ways to describe
the event.
3.Inducement: Write three drafts offering incentives for readers to visit your site. Explain
what awaits them, how they can benefit, or what they will learn, or have a curiosity
satisfied.
4.Bring the best pieces together for the body of your announcement.

In the last two exercises you learned how to write an announcement. In Exercise 3-4 you’ll
learn where to post your announcements. Numerous places exist on the Internet for
posting free announcements. Several of these have a large readership which will generate
immediate traffic from interested net users.
