Exercise 2-6 – Registering Your Site Manually
After the last exercise, you learned how important it is to register your site manually at the major
search engines. It doesn’t take long and you have better control over the results than if you use an
automatic registration service.
This exercise takes you through manual registration at the major search engines used by most
searchers. They are also the ones that appear on Netscape’s and Internet Explorer’s search pages.
You don’t have to limit manual registration to the search engines in this exercise. The last step in
the Manual Registration Worksheet encourages you to register at more of the four-start sites
listed at a good starting point for manual registration – WebStep 100. WebStep 100 lists 100 of
Internet’s best registration locations. WebStep rates each of the 100 sites – four stars and below.
If you feel that you would like to register at more sites than what are covered in this exercise, we
recommend that you concentrate registration on four-star sites.
TIP: Create a "Registration" folder in your browser to bookmark manual registration sites. The
bookmarks will come in handy later when you verify registration or reregister.
Steps for Completing the Manual Registration Worksheet
1.Go to WebStep100. Begin registering your site manually. Sites are listed in alphabetical order
so you can quickly jump to the major four-star search engines listed in this exercise. Start with
Yahoo. It is the most popular and takes several weeks for the registration to be recorded
(sometimes much longer or not at all).
2. Yahoo!: Add your URL on the page where you want your site’s link to appear. You can either
"drill down" through the directories and subdirectories, or you can search for the category (or a
competitor). When you find the applicable page, click on the ‘Add URL’ button at the top.
If you are uncertain whether or not your site is already listed, search for it. If it is there, complete
