addition to the media, compile a list of writers. Look for free-lancers’ bylines, in
writing-related discussion groups, and at web sites that cater to writers. They
often contribute to a number of publications. If you interest them in your release,
they may write the story for a suitable publication, or direct it to the appropriate
editor or another writer.
Visit your bookstore or newsstand. Pick out names and e-mail addresses in relevant
magazines. If you find an editor’s or reporter’s name but no email address, you can look it
up online or call the medium.
Look in the masthead or staff listing in newspapers and magazines for names of appropriate
editors and reporters. Even if you only have a name and no e-mail address, you can look up
the address in "white page" directories at http://www.four11.com or http://www.infoseek.com,
and other major search engines. You can also search discussion groups by the individual’s name at
http://www.dejanews.com or http://infoseek.com. If the journalist is active on-line, such as in
discussion groups for journalists, his or her name will show up in your searches. Caution: don’t
post news releases to journalism groups. They don’t like that and will surely flame you.
For especially high-priority media, you may want to call them and ask for the e-mail address
of individuals you want to contact.
