For fifty years he suffered constantlywith sick headaches, due to a fall in his youth,and for twenty-five years had such distressinghemorrhoids that it was impossible for him torest in the easiest chair; yet in the past forty yearshe traveled a million miles, delivered 30,000sermons— many of them three hours in length—wrote over 50,000 pages (of this size) ofadvanced Biblical exposition, wrote, somemonths, 1,000 letters per month, managed everydepartment of a worldwide evangelisticcampaign employing 700 speakers, personallyFM58compiled the most wonderful Biblical dramaever shown; and with all that, he has been seen,unobserved by himself, to stand by his mantel allnight in prayer, in one position. At one time hiswritings were subjected to an analysis of 20,511Scripture expositions. <strong>The</strong>se were assembled inBiblical order and disclosed but six points ofinquiry, all easily harmonized. No writer, noteven excepting the writers of the Bible, haveever had such critical readers. His works havebeen published in 35 languages. During the lasteight days of his life he had appointments inCalifornia, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska andNew York; and though for several daysmanifestly dying, with cystitis (caused byexcessive travel and speaking), he declined tocancel any engagements, and went out of this lifeOctober 31, 1916, on a railroad train en route tohis Kansas appointment.At the age of 30 he had accumulated a fortune ofover $300,000, but died penniless, his ownfortune, as well as all the large sums contributedto the cause, having been used up in the Master'sservice.
