device alarms), providing some peace of mind to parents, who might fear that their young ones may be<br />

abducted while they are asleep [CLO05].<br />

9.3.8 Golf Ball Tracking<br />

RFID can also help in tracing golf balls. When a player plays a shot off the fairway into the unknown<br />

place and if no RFID tag is embedded, this may result in time wasting in surfing the ball or possibly<br />

the ball gets lost. Importantly, when multiple players are playing in the same area this possibly results<br />

in ball mix-up if all or some are using the same brand [GBT04]. This situation can be prevented by<br />

tagging the ball with an RFID tag with a unique ID. Not only does it save money but also speeds up<br />

the game. The reader, a handheld device with an LCD screen and a pulsing audio tone, is generally<br />

used to pinpoint the right ball when the ball is in its effective range (roughly 10–30.m). It would not be<br />

long before a new golf will come embedded with an RFID reader to detect RFID-embedded golf balls.<br />

9.3.9 Crowd Control<br />

A visitor control and tracking system for a venue having various access points and multiple destination<br />

points include a monitoring system that tracks location and movement of visitors to the venue. In<br />

accordance with the invention, a monitoring system tracks a location and movement of individuals or<br />

crowds in the venue and works in combination with a distributed network of screening units or kiosks<br />

to provide effective crowd control and monitoring. In one embodiment, the monitoring system employs<br />

RFID tags or devices, which are distributed at kiosks to visitors entering the venue. A plurality of RFID<br />

readers or receivers is arranged about the venue and function to scan for the RFID devices. A central<br />

control, operatively connected to each of the RFID receivers, tracks location and movement of each of<br />

the RFID devices to determine a visitor-associated metric for each of the plurality of destination points<br />

[VCC07]. In another embodiment, the visitor-associated metric is simply established by visual crowd<br />

monitoring [ESM06]. For example, RFID will help control crowd trouble at the World Cup, says FIFA.<br />

More than 3.5 million tickets will be sold with an embedded RFID chip containing identification information,<br />

to be checked against a database as fans pass through entrance gates at all 12 stadiums, in June.<br />

It is the first World Cup tournament to use RFID technology to identify cardholders. But, if one senior<br />

FIFA official has his way, the amount of personal information required of fans all of which is quickly<br />

identifiable with the help of RFID will be kept to a minimum at future events.<br />

9.4 access Control<br />

Access control is another area that needs key attention so as to avoid the risks of terrorism and theft.<br />

In the past manual, procedure was used for accessing the building premises, such act of assessing the<br />

building had increased the chances of theft and terrorism [AC07]. The efficient access control system is<br />

generally demanded by many civil and military organizations, because of many reasons, which include<br />

• Enhanced security to limit access to restricted areas<br />

• Tracking employee activity<br />

• Efficient and secure entry and exit<br />

• Improve loss prevention<br />

The various solutions were proposed like barcode, magnetic stripes, and proximity readers, all rely<br />

on the user to either make contact or place the badge very close to the reader. Also, for example, the barcode<br />

scheme has another problem of reading once at a time in addition to the line of sight issue. To address<br />

the above listed issues and the drawbacks of the proposed access control schemes like barcode, etc.,<br />

researchers proposed RFID access control system, which can provide an easy and efficient solution.<br />

Using RFID for access control has the following advantages:<br />
