11.1 Introduction
This chapter provides an introduction to wireless multimedia sensor network (WMSN). We introduce the
WMSN technology by discussing the WMSN architecture and WMSN hardware. WMSN architecture
outlines the different network configurations that can be deployed when setting up a WMSN like single-tier
flat, single-tier clustered, and multitiered architecture. The next section on WMSN hardware (Section 11.4)
covers the wireless motes that are used in deploying the WMSN itself, which include low-resolution motes,
medium-resolution motes, and high-resolution motes. Each mote has additional processing and sensing
capability, which makes it suitable for different applications. The following section (Section 11.5) then
describes potential WMSN applications. These applications include surveillance, traffic monitoring, personal
and health care, habitat monitoring, and target tracking. However, these applications bring with them
a new set of technical challenges like QoS, high bandwidth, localized processing and data fusion, energy
