stack. Also large-scale sensor network may be created by interconnecting the local islands of the sensors
through other wireless technologies without sacrificing the operational efficiencies within each individual
technology [AMC07,BFNPV07].
11.7 Conclusion
In this chapter, we discussed in general about WMSN. A basic introduction to the WMSN technology
was provided by discussing WMSN architecture and the associated hardware, which included lowto-high
resolution WMSN motes used in deploying any WMSN network. A detailed explanation was
provided on different WMSN architectures and their associated advantages and disadvantages, which
can be used by any network designed when designing or deploying a WMSN for any given application
like surveillance, traffic monitoring, personal and health care, habitat monitoring, and target tracking.
A detailed description was then provided on the technical challenges associated with WMSN and how
these could be mitigated by arriving at reasonable trade-offs in design. The next chapter will focus on
WMSN communication protocol stack, which includes the following layers: application layer, transport
layer, network layer, MAC layer, and physical layer.
