14.1 Introduction
The advent of personal computers (PCs) and the Web have provided distributed mechanisms for information
sharing while telephones serve almost exclusively as communication devices [1,2]. Currently,
enterprises utilize a heterogeneous mixture of
• Voice Networks—Voice telephony networks are used to perform daily telecommunications activities
mostly over the public switched telephone network and global system for mobile networks.
• Data Networks—Internet protocol (IP) wired and wireless networks provide a data communication
medium for access to Internet and intranet data services and applications.
• Enterprise Applications—Enterprise software applications allow users to interface with and process
information.
• Data Repositories—Databases and other repositories provide structured storage facilities for
enterprise data.
• Devices—Wireless and wired telephones, computing devices, and sensors are used to visualize,
vocalize, and process enterprise data, applications, and services.
In the IT&T world, convergence refers to the move toward the use of a single united interaction
medium and media as opposed to the many that we use today [3]. Convergence enables telecommunications
services that are concurrently coupled with enterprise and Internet data. The ability to visualize
a concept via images, graphs, tables, and procedures while communicating over the telephone
or a video link greatly enhances interaction. Interaction is more pleasing, meaningful, effective, and
efficient. Furthermore, such media-rich services and the devices that support them allow for actions
to be taken while on the move with greater precision and faster response to market drivers. Therefore,
