Movm.: rotorwindmovement, decorated, gilt, 5 adj., 21 jewels, Glucydur balance, shockprotection for balance, fine adjusting device.Ingenieur Automatic 500.000 A/MThe Ingenieur 500,000 A/m stands for one of the most glorious failures inIWC’s later history, and a failure she was in at least a commercial sense.During the early eighties, IWC had developed two exceptional amagneticmovements based on the ETA calibre 2892, the Porsche compass watch(Ref. 3551 with calibre 37541 and 37542) and the “Minentaucheruhr” forthe German Bundeswehr (Ref. 3519 with Cal. 3755AM). Now, IWC plannedto commercialise the acquired technical know-how by developing an evenmore resistant calibre for a new leader model of their “Ingenieur” line. Thegoal was not to shield the movement against magnetic fields in a soft ironFaraday’s cage as in the previous models, but to make the movement itselfamagnetic.The expectations were even surpassed when the new calibre 35790 set anew world record surviving a field of 3.9 million A/m. Movm.: precision quartz movement JLC 633.Ingenieur Chrono AlarmWith the «Ingenieur Chrono Alarm» another variation of the Genta themewas launched in 1991, this time adding chronograph as well as alarmcomplications to the Ingenieur line. Thanks to its diameter of 34 mmand its military looking main dial, the «Chrono Alarm» gave a more adultimpression than the prior «Chronograph» (Ref. 3734).The model range seems to have been quite effective. Nevertheless it wasalready missing from the catalogue beginning with 1998, most probablymaking way for the «Automatic Alarm» within then launched GST line.The «Chrono Alarm» was however still on stock, with the last pieces beingdelivered as late as 2000.Like its sibling, «Ingenieur Chronograph», the «Chrono Alarm» wasequipped with a meca-quartz movement belonging to the calibre 630.These hybrid calibres were produced by Jaeger-Le Coultre for IWC andcombined quarz-controlled stepping motors with a mechanically drivenchronograph. In the case of the Chrono Alarm’s calibre 633, it wasfurthermore enhanced with an alarm function.These days, the «Ingenieur Chrono Alarm» belongs to the most popularquartz models of the Ingenieur line, here and there even being regardedas a collector’s item.
