CHAPTER 2INTEL ® <strong>64</strong> AND <strong>IA</strong>-<strong>32</strong> PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURESThis chapter gives an overview of features relevant to software optimization forcurrent generations of Intel <strong>64</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>IA</strong>-<strong>32</strong> processors (processors based on the IntelCore microarchitecture, Intel NetBurst microarchitecture; including Intel Core Solo,Intel Core Duo, <strong>and</strong> Intel Pentium M processors). These features are:• Microarchitectures that enable executing instructions with high throughput athigh clock rates, a high speed cache hierarchy <strong>and</strong> high speed system bus• Multicore architecture available in Intel Core 2 Extreme, Intel Core 2 Quad, IntelCore 2 Duo, Intel Core Duo, Intel Pentium D processors, Pentium processorExtreme Edition 1 , <strong>and</strong> Quad-core Intel Xeon, Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors• Hyper-Threading Technology 2 (HT Technology) support• Intel <strong>64</strong> architecture on Intel <strong>64</strong> processors• SIMD instruction extensions: MMX technology, Streaming SIMD Extensions(SSE), Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2), Streaming SIMD Extensions 3(SSE3), <strong>and</strong> Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSSE3)The Intel Pentium M processor introduced a power-efficient microarchitecture withbalanced performance. Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor LV, Intel Core Solo <strong>and</strong> IntelCore Duo processors incorporate enhanced Pentium M processor microarchitecture.The Intel Core 2, Intel Core 2 Extreme, Intel Core 2 Quad processor family, IntelXeon processor 3000, <strong>32</strong>00, 5100, 5300 series are based on the high-performance<strong>and</strong> power-efficient Intel Core microarchitecture. Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700processor, Intel Core 2 Quad processors, Intel Xeon processors <strong>32</strong>00 series, 5300series are quad-core processors. Intel Pentium 4 processors, Intel Xeon processors,Pentium D processors, <strong>and</strong> Pentium processor Extreme Editions are based on IntelNetBurst microarchitecture.1. Quad-core platform requires an Intel Xeon processor <strong>32</strong>00 series, 5300 series, an Intel Core 2Extreme quad-core processor, an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, with appropriate chipset, BIOS, <strong>and</strong>operating system. Dual-core platform requires an Intel Xeon processor 3000 series, Intel Xeonprocessor 5100 series, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Extreme processor X6800, Dual-Core IntelXeon processors, Intel Core Duo, Pentium D processor or Pentium processor Extreme Edition,with appropriate chipset, BIOS, <strong>and</strong> operating system. Performance varies depending on thehardware <strong>and</strong> software used.2. Hyper-Threading Technology requires a computer system with an Intel processor supporting HTTechnology <strong>and</strong> an HT Technology enabled chipset, BIOS <strong>and</strong> operating system.
