including a dinner at his apartment with his wife Beatrix and their two
children, Ivan (8 years) and Fernanda (2 years) and a visit to his
father's ranch near Coronel Vidal on the vast Pampas 320 kms south of the
capital. A visit I will never forget. When I visited Hugo Lopez in
Santiago de Chile in 2006, Gabriel called from Buenos Aires to say hello
to me.
He flew to Santiago last Tuesday to share the celebrations of the
bicentenary of Chile, but was hit by a heart attack when visiting his good
DX-friend Hugo Lopez. Gabriel was cremated on Thursday and his ashes
travel to Buenos Aires on September 25. It is a big loss to me personally
and to the DX-Community all over the world and to RAE, as their DX-editor
has passed away. May he rest in peace.
(Anker Petersen-DEN, dswci DXW Sept 24)
This e-mail is to inform you, the death of our friend Gabriel Ivan Barrera
as consequence of heart fulminant attack, the death was in Santiago,
Chile. I received a phone call from Hugo Lopez at at 05.55 UTC informing
me the sad news. GIB arrived yesterday to Chile. (Eramo)
Here is a rough translation of the e-mail text from DXer Hugo Lopez,
CE3BBC Chile and has just being circulated in various DX reflectors: "The
saddest news of Radio that happened to me in my life is to share with you,
the news on the sudden death of our comrade and friend, GABRIEL IVAN
BARRERA. He arrived in Santiago to share the celebrations of the
bicentenary of his dearly beloved CHILE. The land of his birth has also
sought today to be the departure.
It happened tonight, Sep 14, at 2315 Chilean Time due a fulminant heart
attack. It was among antennas and radios in my shack, Internet sharing and
enjoying our passion. Thanks to each and every one of you, who shared with
and felt my best friend. 73 compadre, from where you deliver us your
wisdom that one day you shared with me. I love you infinitely. Hugo Lopez
Carmona. Contact: ce3bbc@hotmail.com . (Nigro)
Sad news indeed. He joined Numero Uno in June 1990, when John Herkimer was
editing, and stayed with us in DXplorer. "GIB," as he was known, was the
editor of the "Onda Corta" bulletin among other DX publications, and he
was always a reliable reporter. R.I.P. (Berg)
He was a knowledgable DXer willing to go the extra mile for DXers,
especially in securing RAE veries. I have his publication from 1990,
"Latin American Radio World." (Herkimer)
I knew GIB mostly by reputation, although on several occasions in the past
he helped me directly with considerable information. His sudden passing is
very sad. He surely will be missed greatly. (Jensen)
Gabriel was one of my best friends. I was today with his father and a few
minutes ago I visited Radiodifusion Argentina al Exterior to inform the
Spanish Section Manager about this sad news. This is one of my sad days of
my life. (Slaen)
My feelings by the death of Gabriel Ivan Barrera, a DX legend! Good bye
Gabriel. (Otavio)
Very sad news, GABRIEL IVAN BARRERA passing. He was a good friend.
