9525.89 Voice of Indonesia 1300-1401 Jul 19. En xmsn, with program
lineup, then news; the audio was lost around 1315 with just open carrier
until 1345, when audio came back on (music); 1401 out of En and into
Bahasa Indonesia with warta berita. Strong.
4749.96 RRI Makassar (pres) 1200-1210 Jul 23. SCI right at 1200, then
Jakarta relay a half-minute later. Poor.
4604.90 RRI Serui, 1233, July 22. Non-stop EZL songs in English; "Top of
the World" by Carpenters, "The Ballad of High Noon", etc.; 1300-1310: song
Anthem (Indonesia Raya); checked again at 1330 to found them off the air.
Thanks to Atsunori Ishida's blog for the alert that they had returned.
Atsunori noted them today with 1326* UT. Was as strong as RRI Palangkaraya
on 3325 kHz.
IRELAND 252 LF So one could speculate on whether neighbouring Eire
252 kHz could, despite a weaker signal that isn't so weak after all,
perform equally well like Droitwich 198 kHz vis-a-vis its co-ch. ALG.
In a way, it does, it's strong, but Algeria is closer to me and, above
all, their tx is quite near the coast, otherwise I'm sure it would
perform like the Bechar 153 kHz & Ouargla 198 kHz txs, i.e. poorly,
so IRL never dominates the ch., at least down here.
However, I can get Summerhill's signal with nil or almost nil QRM,
depending on the conditions, thanks to the K9AY. By the way, does anyone
know the genuine name for the Irish tx location listed as being located at
Summerhill - what on earth is this for a true Irish name?! It should be
Goidelic, not English!
(Carlos Goncalves-POR, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 16)
Hello Carlos, Yes, there are interesting phenomena to be heard on LW -
I've heard similar things myself, the most interesting being the
Luxembourg effect. But the closer you are to a station the less you hear.
Long Wave fades are not the same as we hear via MW. They are usually more
prolonged, and the audio becomes distorted and mushy. I'm sure that the
terrain does make a difference, but a large part of the path from Nador is
over the Med to you. The BBC usually make an announcement before the
Droitwich transmitter on 198 kHz is to be off for maintenance or any other
reason because of it's use for other things besides broadcasting.
The Irish LW station is located NW of Dublin in County Meath and really is
adjacent to the town/village of Summerhill. There's probably an Irish name
for it - as there is in Wales and parts of Scotland for various places -
but reference is to Summerhill. On You Tube ask for
