SURA radar for atmospheric studies. Observations of mesospheric echoes<br />

were carried out at the SURA facility of Radiophysical Research Institute<br />

(NIRFI, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia). It is situated a few kilometers from the<br />

small town of Vasil'sursk about 140 km eastward of N. Novgorod<br />

(geographical coordinates 56.13 N, 46.10 E). The Mesospheric radar was<br />

created at SURA using the heating facility antenna array <strong>de</strong>signed for<br />

artificial modification of the ionosphere by powerful HF radiation. This<br />

antenna array consists of 12 x 12 crossed dipoles divi<strong>de</strong>d into three<br />

i<strong>de</strong>ntical sub-arrays in the magnetic north+south direc-tion (about 9<strong>de</strong>gr<br />

to the east from the geographical north) and can be operated in the<br />

frequency range of 4.5+ 9 MHz with both left and right circular<br />

polarizations. It is steerable in the north+south direction up to 40<strong>de</strong>gr<br />

from the vertical (Belov et al., 1983). The main parameters ofthe antenna<br />

array are shown in Table 1.<br />

Each antenna sub-array is fully in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt, and one of the sub-arrays is<br />

used as a transmitting antenna, while another is used as a receiving<br />

antenna. This same radar was used for magnetospheric sounding (Gurevich et<br />

al., 1992) with one of the main heating transmitters. These broadcast<br />

transmitters were <strong>de</strong>signed for continuous operation and were not very<br />

suitable for our mesosphere investigations, due mainly to high electricity<br />

costs and l<strong>im</strong>ited pulse characteristics. Therefore another transmitter was<br />

connected to one of the antenna sub-arrays for mesosphere sounding, namely<br />

a pulsed transmitter with about 50-kW peak power. The transmitter<br />

parameters are shown in Table 2.<br />

The radar receiver is a modified professional receiver with a wi<strong>de</strong> filter<br />

bandwidth to operate with short pulses and with a quadrature <strong>de</strong>tector that<br />

provi<strong>de</strong>s phase measurements.<br />

The facility at Vasil'sursk.<br />

The laboratory was foun<strong>de</strong>d in 1965 in Vasil'sursk located at latitu<strong>de</strong><br />

56 07 N, longitu<strong>de</strong> 46 00 E, about 140 km East from Nizhny Novgorod. The<br />

low frequency facility has an antenna array, comprising three sections.<br />

Figure 1 shows the system of 12 by 12 crossed dipole elements, which<br />

covers an area of 300 by 300 metres. Each of the three sections has an set<br />

of 4 by 12 elements; each section can be pointed in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>ntly. The beams<br />

may be steered manually or electrically, in steps of three <strong>de</strong>grees, to<br />

point at angles between 12 and 85 <strong>de</strong>grees. Each section has a 300-metre<br />

aperture, and its radiation pattern approx<strong>im</strong>ates to a sin(x)/x shape.<br />

Radiated signals are circularly polarised.<br />

A separate 250 kW transmitter is connected to each of the three antenna<br />

sections. Transmitter frequencies are stable to one part in 10(exp 7).<br />

Amplitu<strong>de</strong> or phase modulation (or both together) are available, and<br />

external synchronisation is possible. Emissions may be a continuous<br />

carrier or a pulsed emission whose shortest pulse is 50 milliseconds. The<br />
