GERMANY Evangelischer Pressedienst reported November 4 that far-reaching
reforms will be done at Deutsche Welle (DW) due to heavy financial
pressure. Job positions in the three-digit range will be eliminated by
2014. This was the outcome of a closed meeting of DW directors. Shortwave
will be kept only for Africa. Elsewhere DW will rely on the internet and
local rebroadcasting partners instead. There will be no reductions in the
number of languages broadcast. DW expects a shrinking budget. Even an
unchanged budget of 273 million Euro per year would until 2014 result in a
deficit of 23 million Euro due to increasing costs.

Diskussionen ueber Umbau der Deutschen Welle.
Endgueltiges Konzept im Fruehjahr - Irritationen in der Belegschaft
Bonn (epd). Die Ankuendigungen zum Umbau bei der Deutschen Welle (DW)
sorgen intern fuer Diskussionen. Bei einer Personalversammlung am 25.
November in Bonn forderte Personalratsvorsitzender Stefan Dege Intendant
Erik Bettermann dazu auf, ein "klares Unternehmenskonzept" vorzulegen.
