(Ron Howard-CA-USA, dxld July 22) IRELAND 252 LF So one could speculate on whether neighbouring Eire 252 kHz could, despite a weaker signal that isn't so weak after all, perform equally well like Droitwich 198 kHz vis-a-vis its co-ch. ALG. In a way, it does, it's strong, but Algeria is closer to me and, above all, their tx is quite near the coast, otherwise I'm sure it would perform like the Bechar 153 kHz & Ouargla 198 kHz txs, i.e. poorly, so IRL never dominates the ch., at least down here. However, I can get Summerhill's signal with nil or almost nil QRM, depending on the conditions, thanks to the K9AY. By the way, does anyone know the genuine name for the Irish tx location listed as being located at Summerhill - what on earth is this for a true Irish name?! It should be Goidelic, not English! (Carlos Goncalves-POR, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 16) Hello Carlos, Yes, there are interesting phenomena to be heard on LW - I've heard similar things myself, the most interesting being the Luxembourg effect. But the closer you are to a station the less you hear. Long Wave fades are not the same as we hear via MW. They are usually more prolonged, and the audio becomes distorted and mushy. I'm sure that the terrain does make a difference, but a large part of the path from Nador is over the Med to you. The BBC usually make an announcement before the Droitwich transmitter on 198 kHz is to be off for maintenance or any other reason because of it's use for other things besides broadcasting. The Irish LW station is located NW of Dublin in County Meath and really is adjacent to the town/village of Summerhill. There's probably an Irish name for it - as there is in Wales and parts of Scotland for various places - but reference is to Summerhill. and you will see a shot of the mast which seems to be just beyond someones back garden. Transmitting sites are usually named after the nearest town or village - 198 kHz isn't within Droitwich but some way south of that town. Moorside Edge really is built on the edge of a moor and is not the name of a town or village. Wolfy could no doubt give you the actual geographic location of the Summerhill station.
