Transmitter antenna of this type Blaw-Knox, is a real technical marvel for
its time. It has a diamond shape, is 215 meters high and weighs 130 tons,
and is reinforced with four iron buckle. Of this type in Bulgaria has one
antenna - Stara Zagora - also built in 1936, but the Hungarian company
Standard. In Europe they are only two such antennas - one in England and
Hungary.
The transmitter is located six kilometers south of the city, near the
village Voyvodovo and released in 1995, altitude (terrain elevation): 200
m, antenna height: 110 m. On April 6, 2010, in order to optimize costs,
BNR stops most of the transmitters on medium wave, including CBA and
Most remarkable: No signal on 594 kHz, so Pleven either goes off until
2100 UT (had no opportunity to check earlier in the day so far) or, which
is more likely of course, has been shut down. Practically 594 is at night
a dead frequency here now, on usual radios only a mess of some carriers
can be made out, at times not even this.
1224, which has pretty faint modulation, goes off at 2200 UT. Last night
Iran quite nicely emerged from the Spanish mess this frequency otherwise
is.
1161: Probably all three transmitters are still on air, in fade peaks
there appear to be even three transmitters, with the prominent one (which
would be Stara Zagora) being the one with the second-longest delay. But
this could be a deception.
And indeed 261 is still on air, too, quite weak but // 1161, so no doubt
indeed the Vakarel transmitter. Both 261 and 1161 stay on air beyond 2200
UT.
By the way, the project to sell the Bulgarian transmitter network to
Oesterreichische Rundfunksender GmbH finally fell through:
