The decline of AM broadcst continues.
With the closing down of AM broadcast from Radio Sweden on the 30th of
October 2010, Sweden has become the 4th country in Europe without active
AM transmitters. The other three countries are Liechtenstein (with AM
broadcast on medium wave between the years 1938 and 1939), Andorra (all AM
broadcasts from there were closed in 1982) and San Marino (with no active
AM transmitters at any time).
Worldwide there are about 32 countries and territories without active AM
transmitters. Many of them are islands; the biggest is Jamaica with an
area of about 11,000 square kilometers. A relatively big country group is
located in West-Africa. The country with the biggest area with no AM
transmitters is Namibia with about 824,000, on the second place is Sweden
with about 450,000 square kilometres. Well, at the beginning of the next
year we will have with Switzerland the fifth country in Europe without AM
transmitter anymore.
