Andorra, here is a Radio Andorre Diary - translated by Philip J Ward<br />

(recent resi<strong>de</strong>nt of Paris) from<br />

<br />

1935: Project to create a national radio station in the principality of<br />

Andorra. A franchise of 30 years is signed.<br />

1936: Creation of regulatory body 'Radio Information'. The radio contract<br />

signed the previous year is exten<strong>de</strong>d from 30 to 60 years.<br />

1937: Beginning of the construction of the transmitter for Radio Andorre,<br />

with official response from the French state with regulation on the power<br />

of the signal. France refuses signal strength over 200 watts.<br />

1938: the colonel of the gendarmerie (armed police force) Baulard attempts<br />

to stop the construction works for the transmitter, the Andorrans support<br />

Jacques Tremoulet and Stanislas Puiggros against the assault coming from<br />

the French. After refusing to do so, France eventually gives authorization<br />

to Radio Andorre to construct the transmitter. However, the strength of<br />

the transmission is fixed at 60 kw long-wave and 1 kw shortwave.<br />

1939: August 7th: the first transmissions go out where you can here the<br />

famous "Here, Radio Andorre" from Victoria Zorzano.<br />

1940: The war having erupted in France, the transmissions are only ma<strong>de</strong> in<br />

Spanish and Catalan from July to October.<br />

1946: Victoria Zorzano leaves the station to marry an owner of car<br />

<strong>de</strong>alership in the principality of Andorra<br />

1948: Several inci<strong>de</strong>nts of interference of the station occur, and France<br />

prohibits bor<strong>de</strong>r access [bor<strong>de</strong>r sanctions] to discs and radiophonic<br />

material. Radio Andorre <strong>de</strong>monstrates and complains to the director general<br />

of the RDF, retrieving damages payments and interest.<br />

1949: the measures taken the year before are recognised as illegal by the<br />

French state.<br />

1956: Increase in the signal strength.<br />

1960: The Marquet brothers take over the station that they will <strong>de</strong>velop<br />

until its last broadcast.<br />

1961: A radio contract of 20 years is signed with the SOFIRAD [the<br />

regulatory body].<br />

1964: The station welcomes a stage of the Tour <strong>de</strong> France in the<br />

principality of Andorra<br />

1971: Death of Jacques Tremoulet.<br />

1975: A long-wave transmission project in multiple European languages is<br />

proposed and rejected, with Andorra using any resources to transmit this<br />

program project.<br />
