The military reg<strong>im</strong>e in Myanmar sud<strong>de</strong>nly has changed the official name of<br />

the country from "Union of Myanmar" to "The Republic of the Union of<br />

Myanmar" a few weeks before the Parlamentary Election on Nov 07. At the<br />

same t<strong>im</strong>e the official Flag and the National Anthem will be changed. The<br />

military has been in power since 1962 and changed the official name from<br />

Burma to Myanmar in 1989.<br />

ROMANIA/GREECE Radio Romania International's English service has<br />

announced that, on Monday October 25, its history series 'Pro Memoria'<br />

will carry a feature 'on radio as the only form of fighting against<br />

communism available to the Romanian diaspora' prior to 1989. Apparently,<br />

the programme will put the spotlight on Radio Free Europe and other<br />

American-backed stations. 'Pro Memoria' is carried in all of RRI's English<br />

transmissions.<br />

Were there any other American-backed stations in Romanian? (gh)<br />

Hi Glenn, I haven't heard the programme yet, but according to RRI there<br />

were other American-backed stations broadcasting to Romania. In their prepublicity,<br />

RRI mentions 'Radio Thessalonika'. It's not clear to me what<br />

they mean by this. I suppose they could mean the VOA relay, or was there a<br />

'Radio Thessalonika' broadcasting in Romanian? See their webpage<br />

and click on "What's on This Week".<br />

[later:] Glenn, The 'Pro Memoria' feature was mainly about a station<br />

called Radio Future Romania, which was apparently broadcast from<br />

Thessaloniki until 1960. There was an interview with a Romanian exile,<br />

Mugur Valahu, who worked for the station, which he cla<strong>im</strong>ed was more<br />
