PAKISTAN USAID sign $8 million agreement for up-gradation of two AM<br />

transmitters for PBC.<br />

Pakistan and US Agency for International Development (USAID) past Thursday<br />

signed an agreement worth $8 million for provision of two AM transmitters<br />

to Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) a<strong>im</strong>ed at enhancing radio<br />

transmission coverage in Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan.The United States<br />

Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson, Director USAID-Pakistan Robert<br />

J. Wilson, Fe<strong>de</strong>ral Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman<br />

Kaira and PBC Director General Murtaza Solangi signed the agreement on<br />

behalf of their respective governments.<br />

The signing ceremony held at PBC headquarters was also atten<strong>de</strong>d by<br />

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Syed Sumsam Ali Shah<br />

Bukhari and other high officials.<br />

On this occasion Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman<br />

Kaira said the signing of the agreement titled "Statement of collaboration<br />

between the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation and the United States Agency<br />

for International Development" is an effort to upgra<strong>de</strong> AM transmitters in<br />

Peshawar and D.I.Khan.<br />

He said the key objective of this bilateral collaboration is to expand<br />

radio broadcasts in the Fe<strong>de</strong>rally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and<br />

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.<br />

Kaira informed the participants of the ceremony that the Pakistan Peoples<br />

Party-led coalition government has <strong>de</strong>dicated 2010 as the Year of the<br />

radio. He thanked the US for extending this support to Radio Pakistan.<br />

Radio is a medium which has the largest numbers of listeners so we can<br />

approach max<strong>im</strong>um people with radio but unfortunately this sector was<br />

ignored in the past, he said.<br />

The government priority is to <strong>im</strong>prove performance and enhance capacity of<br />

Radio Pakistan to ensure its transmission reaches every corner of the<br />

country.<br />

Kaira said with the introduction of TV channels, Radio was ignored but<br />

with the effective strategy of the people's government radio transmissions<br />

have been revived and FM channels are working effectively.<br />

US government and the mo<strong>de</strong>rn world is extending constant support to us for<br />

which Pakistan is grateful for them, he ad<strong>de</strong>d. He said, "We firmly believe<br />

in the incredible power of this medium to help us reach every Pakistani no<br />

matter where he or she lives."<br />
