inform you about the whereabouts of the KBC Koma Rock shortwave station
that the author was not able to find the station itself, writing instead
that it probably was dismantled together with its transmitting masts.
Well, the transmitting station is still there and has still got the two
Thompson 250 kW shortwave transmitters, albeit not functional from my last
visit in August this year. The two antennas, four supporting masts for
directional dipoles, are 80% functional from a mechanical survey, lacking
few isolators at the motorized changeover switch located at the base of
the four masts.
I was lucky enough to hear the test broadcasts of the External Service of
the Voice of Kenya (VoK) in 1985 on 9635 kHz via long path. They were
broadcasting the Domestic service of the English service of the Voice Of
Kenya, complete with English commercials. This was via their new 250 kW
transmitters. The VoK External Service never made it past this testing
stage as the VoK External Service programs never materialised.
KUWAIT Could detect a carrier on 15540 kHz at 1805 November 22nd, very
weak audio. Went to Global Tuners, using an Icom PCR-100 15 km South of
Vienna heard indeterminate talk in English at 1815 UT, faded up at 1817
with "you have been listening to the series..." and then faded down again.
At 1826 UT recheck heard music, then at 1830 UT nice fade up and heard
time pips, last one elongated and "This is Radio Kuwait, the time is 9.30
p.m. local time".
(Mike Barraclough-UK, dxld Nov 24)
LUXEMBOURG 1440 DRM transmissions on 1440 have been cut back to a token
operation between 8 AM and 9 AM local time. Otherwise the Marnach
transmitter is operated in AM 0430-0800 and 1700-0200 local time or
thereabouts. A large amount of this airtime is leased out to missionaries,
CRI and KBS, which presumably for now has saved 1440 kHz from being closed
down altogether.
It is understood that Marnach has now Transradio solid-state equipment for
600 kW and that 600 kW is the power at which the paid relays are being
run. The tube transmitters (S 4006, they should still have an even older
600 kW Telefunken/Transradio transmitter with classic plate modulation as
well), in the past ran in a pair as 1200 kW, are no longer in routine use.
RTL DRM use of 6095 may have been cut back even further now. It has been
reported that the transmitter was on from 0700 to 0800 only, carrying
0700-0730 the abridged version of KBS German and 0730-0800 RTL Radio.
Exactly the same pattern as on 1440 kHz.
MALAYSIA [PALAU/SARAWAK/UAE] An interesting article on Radio Free
Sarawak was found in 11/15 edition of "Hornbill Unleashed"

Sarawakians in the interior of the state will now have an alternative
source of information with the Radio Free Sarawak beginning transmission
today. The broadcast is being transmitted out of London, and consists of
only one hour of programming from 6.30 to 7.30 am Sarawak time on the
short-wave frequency 7590 kHz. The same news, current affairs and
commentary programme will be repeated the same day from 6-7 pm local time
