All India Radio confirms or<strong>de</strong>r for two Megawatt DRM MW transmitters.<br />

India's national broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) has placed an or<strong>de</strong>r for<br />

the supply of two 1000 kilowatt DRM capable medium wave transmitters.<br />

These will replace old analogue transmitters of same capacity at Chinsurah<br />

(West Bengal) and Rajkot (Gujrat), with state-of-the-art solid state<br />

transmitters.<br />

The new Megawatt transmitters can be operated in analogue, in s<strong>im</strong>ulcast or<br />

in DRM mo<strong>de</strong> with automatic change-over between these three operational<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>s. The transmitters shall provi<strong>de</strong> coverage to very large areas in the<br />

Indian sub-continent as well to the West, North, East and Southeast Asia.<br />

This significant purchase was revealed at the recently conclu<strong>de</strong>d Broadcast<br />

Engineering Society (BES) India's conference in New Delhi, atten<strong>de</strong>d by<br />

exhibitors and participants from all over the world. The need for cheaper<br />

digital radio sets and content innovation was highlighted by speakers<br />

during the event.<br />

All India Radio has already chosen DRM as the technology for converting<br />

its vast analogue network to digital. This is part of its digital radio<br />

switchover strategy where more than 40 transmitters are to be ma<strong>de</strong> DRM<br />

capable in the near future. AIR is already broadcasting in DRM from one of<br />

its high-power shortwave transmitter located at Khampur near Delhi that<br />

covers an area of approx<strong>im</strong>ately 800 kilometre radius.<br />

The DRM Consortium is <strong>de</strong>lighted with this <strong>de</strong>velopment which un<strong>de</strong>rlines the<br />

commitment ma<strong>de</strong> by India to new technology in general and the DRM standard<br />

in particular.<br />

828 Last year I visited the SW & MW transmitters of AIR Panaji. Then I<br />

was told that they were changing their Vividh Bharati 20 kW transmitter on<br />

1539 kHz to 828 kHz due to co channel interference from Voice of America.<br />

In November 2009 I heard them on the new 828 kHz and reported to them.<br />

Recently I got an email reply from the Station Engineer that they were on<br />

low power at that t<strong>im</strong>e and that now they are on full power. They are<br />

interested in reception reports of this transmitter.<br />

By the way it is heard only very faintly at my location and there is co<br />

channel interference from Radio Pakistan. Inci<strong>de</strong>ntly the SW transmissions<br />

from AIR Panaji are not fully operational now.<br />
