the general description of the feature. That is, for each given isogloss,
all existing typologies are discussed and representative examples are
given, but not every language is included.
B. The full database provided on DVD will include all the relevant data on
each of the 350 features for each of the 65–70 languages.
C. Also on the DVD, short grammatical descriptions linked to the data are
provided for any given feature within any given language.
5 Isoglosses plotted onto maps
In the following section, I will give examples of eight of the 350 features I have
singled out for the AILA zone and will plot their areal distribution as isoglosses
on maps of the area. Since it is not possible to show isoglosses on full geographic
maps in color in an article such as the present one, I have devised
the following schematic way of representing the major languages in relative
geographic location to each other and to represent the isogloss areas by shading:
