all existing typologies are discussed <strong>and</strong> representative examples are<br />

given, but not every language is included.<br />

B. The full database provided on DVD will include all the relevant data on<br />

each of the 350 features for each of the 65–70 languages.<br />

C. Also on the DVD, short grammatical descriptions linked to the data are<br />

provided for any given feature within any given language.<br />

5 Isoglosses plotted onto maps<br />

In the following section, I will give examples of eight of the 350 features I have<br />

singled out for the AILA zone <strong>and</strong> will plot their areal distribution as isoglosses<br />

on maps of the area. Since it is not possible to show isoglosses on full geographic<br />

maps in color in an article such as the present one, I have devised<br />

the following schematic way of representing the major languages in relative<br />

geographic location to each other <strong>and</strong> to represent the isogloss areas by shading:<br />
