The poetics of continuity underlying Herberto Helder’s literary
writing, as well as the powerful and diverse intertextual dialogues
it keeps nourishing, justifies the development of a possible baroque
reading of his poetic work. More than pursuing a thematic or a stylistic
profile, our focus is on the visual quality of Helder’s poetry, namely on
the strategies that underlie a certain dramatising of his poetic look,
and on his distinctive modes and contexts of perception. This leads us,
on the one hand, to different approaches based on photographic and
cinematographic visual grammars, or still life painting techniques and
interpretative effects. On the other hand, it also implies religious and
visionary baroque imagery, all seemingly summoned by Helder’s intensive
writing and his processual understanding of beauty.
Olhando, do ponto em que nos encontramos, para a vasta bibliografia
editada de Herberto Helder, fica a sensação de uma disputa
interminável entre o que seja escrever e o que, aparentemente, tem
que ser a escrita. entre Poema e posia. O que reverte directamente do
modo como o poeta tem compreendido o seu métier oficinal: um artesanato
que se faz com o corpo e contra ele, que lida com sangue e carne
embora se esquive quase sempre à forma, espacialmente organizada e
