ABSTRACT
Taking as ethnographic reference point a Sunni mosque of Muslim community situated at the
neighborhood of Tijuca, north of Rio de Janeiro, this dissertation intends to investigate what
is called here ‘rationalizing codification’ of Islamic religious doctrine. This encoding process
is present at the transmission process of the doctrine and other linked knowledges, pervading
many spheres of the community religious life. Thus this dissertation will address the various
processes and relationships which take place, analyzing the various dimensions involved:
cognitive, emotional, social relations, religious doctrine. The aim is to investigate and to draw
out an ethnographic map of the religious life of the community, daily life and religious attendance
on the mosque to localize the codification, transmission and reception of this rationalized
religious knowledge.
The general discussion pass through the question of the many possible relations of affinity
or conflict which science, religion, scientific rationality and religious thought can establish
between each other.
