carried back one stage fur<strong>the</strong>r in 37-71. Sin, as affecting man-<br />

kind at large, did not originate with <strong>the</strong> Watchers, but with <strong>the</strong><br />

Satans, 40'', who appear to belong to a counter kingdom <strong>of</strong> evil<br />

ruled by a chief called Satan 53^. They existed as evil<br />

agencies before <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Watchers; for <strong>the</strong> guilt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

latter consisted in <strong>the</strong>ir becoming subject to Satan, and so sub-<br />

sequently leading mankind astray 54^.<br />

Angelology. The angelology appears in our <strong>book</strong> in a very<br />

developed form. The subject is too large to enter on here. The<br />

reader can consult <strong>the</strong> Index. We might, however, shortly<br />

remark that <strong>the</strong> seven archangels SO^-^ 81= 872> ^ ggi 9021, 22 i^^^<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest order, <strong>the</strong>ir names being given in 20^. In 40 only four<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are mentioned as <strong>the</strong> angels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence. Then come<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cherubim, Seraphim, Ophannim, <strong>the</strong> angel <strong>of</strong> peace, angels<br />

<strong>of</strong> principalities and powers. Watchers, angels <strong>of</strong> punishment.<br />

Demouologj/, Two classes can be clearly distinguished here.<br />

[a) The fallen Watchers or <strong>the</strong> angels who kept not <strong>the</strong>ir first<br />

estate 6 IS" 69^-3 86 lOSi^'-". These are referred to in Jude 6<br />

and 1 Pet. 2*. From <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir first judgement anterior<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Deluge <strong>the</strong>y were kept imprisoned in darkness. They<br />

were subject to Satan 54". [b) The demons IS^. ". " IS^ 19 99^.<br />

The demons are, according to 16\ <strong>the</strong> spirits which went forth<br />

from <strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> giants, who were <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fallen<br />

angels and <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> men. These demons were to work<br />

moral ruin on <strong>the</strong> earth without hindrance till <strong>the</strong> final judge-<br />

ment as disembodied spirits.<br />

So in <strong>the</strong> N.T. <strong>the</strong> demons are disembodied spirits, Matt. 12*^~*'<br />

Luke 11^*"^". They are not punished till <strong>the</strong> final judgement.<br />

This is clearly <strong>the</strong> explanation <strong>of</strong> Matt. 8^', 'Art thou come<br />

hi<strong>the</strong>r to torment us before (he time ?' They are subject to<br />

Satan, Matt. 122*-28.<br />
