Sect. IV] Chapter XC. 13-14 211<br />

and f<strong>the</strong>y cried to <strong>the</strong> ravens f<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y should break <strong>the</strong> horn<br />

<strong>of</strong> that ranij and <strong>the</strong>y battled<br />

and fought with it, and it<br />

battled with <strong>the</strong>m and cried<br />

that its help might come.<br />

<strong>the</strong>re came with <strong>the</strong>m all <strong>the</strong><br />

sheep <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field, yea, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

all came toge<strong>the</strong>r, and helped<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r to break that horn<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ram.<br />

19. And I saw till a great sword was given to <strong>the</strong> sheep, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> sheep proceeded against all <strong>the</strong> beasts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field to slay<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, and all <strong>the</strong> beasts and <strong>the</strong> birds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heaven fled before<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir face.<br />

14. And I saw till that man,<br />

who wrote down <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> shepherds [and] carried up<br />

into <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sheep [came and helped<br />

it and showed it everything<br />

he had come down for <strong>the</strong> help<br />

<strong>of</strong> that rain].<br />

above that <strong>the</strong> evidence points to <strong>the</strong>se<br />

doublets having already existed in <strong>the</strong><br />

Hebrew. It is uncertain whe<strong>the</strong>r this<br />

clause was added in <strong>the</strong> Hebrew or in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Greek. Its reference, however, is<br />

clear. The words speak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> help<br />

given by Michael to Judas Maccabaeus.<br />

According to 2 Maco. 11^ Judas and all<br />

<strong>the</strong> people prayed to God to send an<br />

angel to help <strong>the</strong>m, and in 11* it is<br />

I'eeounted that ' <strong>the</strong>re appeared at<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir head one on horseback in white<br />

apparel brandishing weapons <strong>of</strong> gold ',<br />

i. e. Michael, <strong>the</strong> angelic patron <strong>of</strong><br />

Israel, who is also <strong>the</strong> heavenly scribe<br />

in <strong>the</strong>se chapters. In ver. 15 <strong>the</strong><br />

words ' into His shadow ' can hardly<br />

be original. The corresponding phrase<br />

in ver. IS '<br />

from among <strong>the</strong> sheep<br />

: '<br />

17. And I saw that man,<br />

who wrote <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> according<br />

to <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord,<br />

till he opened that <strong>book</strong> con-<br />

cerning <strong>the</strong> destruction which<br />

those twelve last shepherds had<br />

wrought, and showed that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had destroyed much more than<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir predecessors, before <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sheep.<br />

seems | right. The former = vS3<br />

which may be a corruption<br />

= ' from among <strong>the</strong> sheep '<br />

<strong>of</strong> |XSD<br />

In ver.<br />

18 <strong>the</strong> words 'staff' and 'smote <strong>the</strong><br />

earth' recall Num. 20^^, while <strong>the</strong><br />

phrase ' <strong>the</strong> earth clave asunder ' recalls<br />

Num. 1631-33. The text = pKH y)<br />

Dn'?y. We should observe that <strong>the</strong><br />

Ethiopio for '<strong>the</strong> earth covered <strong>the</strong>m',<br />

i. c. kadanat dlbehomii, is not Ethiopic,<br />

but a literal reproduction <strong>of</strong> iKdhvtpef<br />

Itt' avTovSj which in turn is not Greek,<br />

but a literal reproduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Hebrew Dn'hv D3m (Num. IB^S).<br />
