ly <strong>the</strong> Meet One : <strong>the</strong> Praise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Elect One and <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

LXI. 1. And I saw in those days how long cords were given<br />

to those angels, and <strong>the</strong>y took to <strong>the</strong>mselves wings and flew, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y went towards <strong>the</strong> north.<br />

2. And I asked <strong>the</strong> angel, saying unto him :<br />

' Why have<br />

those (angels) taken <strong>the</strong>se cords and gone <strong>of</strong>f ? ' And he said<br />

unto me : ' They have gone to measui*e/<br />

3. And <strong>the</strong> angel who went with me said unto me<br />

' These shall bring <strong>the</strong> measures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous,<br />

And <strong>the</strong> ropes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous to <strong>the</strong> righteous.<br />

That <strong>the</strong>y may stay <strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong><br />

Spirits for ever and ever.<br />

4. The elect shall begin to dwell with <strong>the</strong> elect.<br />

here may be due to <strong>the</strong> interpolator.<br />

Elsewhere this chapter speaks <strong>of</strong> ' an-<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r angel' sent by Michael, 60*> '< ^'.<br />

LXI. 1. Here <strong>the</strong> true text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Parables is resumed, but <strong>the</strong> opening<br />

verses are very difficult. Those<br />

angels, q reads ' <strong>the</strong> two angels'. The<br />

angels here referred to may have been<br />

definitely named in some preceding<br />

part now lost. Wings. In <strong>the</strong> O. T.<br />

<strong>the</strong> angels are not represented as winged,<br />

unless in its latest <strong>book</strong>s ; cf. 1 Chron.<br />

north-west ; cf. 70'. Paradise is <strong>the</strong><br />

destination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angels ; cf. 60' (note).<br />

2. The angel, i.e. <strong>the</strong> angel <strong>of</strong> peace,<br />

who is <strong>the</strong> anrjelus interpres in <strong>the</strong><br />

sections dealing with <strong>the</strong> Elect One :<br />

which <strong>the</strong> angels take with <strong>the</strong>m are<br />

for measuring Paradise. See <strong>the</strong> refer-<br />

angels with measuring cords see Ezek.<br />

ch. 52 <strong>the</strong>re are two sources. These<br />

verses belong to <strong>the</strong> 'Son <strong>of</strong> Man'<br />

source, since <strong>the</strong> angelus interpret is<br />

' <strong>the</strong> angel who went with me ' See<br />

Ir.trod. p. 64 sq. 3. The measures<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous represent alike <strong>the</strong><br />

blessed and <strong>the</strong>ir habitation. They<br />

are an ideal representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> com-<br />

munity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous, living and<br />

departed, and reveal especially <strong>the</strong><br />

latter ; for it matters not by what<br />

death <strong>the</strong>se perished; <strong>the</strong>y are alive<br />

unto <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits, and will re-<br />

turn and stay <strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong> day<br />
