Sect. II] Chapter LXI. 5-11 121<br />

9. And when he shall lift up his countenance<br />

To judge <strong>the</strong>ir secret ways according to <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits,<br />

And <strong>the</strong>ir^ path according to <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous<br />

judgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits,<br />

Then shall <strong>the</strong>y all with one voice speak and bless,<br />

And glorify and extol and sanctify <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

<strong>of</strong> Spirits.<br />

10. And He will summon all <strong>the</strong> host <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavens, and all<br />

<strong>the</strong> holy ones above, and <strong>the</strong> host <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>the</strong> Cherubin,<br />

Seraphin, and Ophannin, and all <strong>the</strong> angels <strong>of</strong> power, and all<br />

<strong>the</strong> angels <strong>of</strong> principalities, and <strong>the</strong> Elect One, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

powers on <strong>the</strong> earth (and) over <strong>the</strong> water 11. On that day<br />

shall raise one voice, and bless and glorify and exalt in <strong>the</strong> spirit<br />

<strong>of</strong> faith, and in <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> wisdom, and in <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> patience.<br />

matter see 41' note. 9. Their . . .<br />

to <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dently parallel with <strong>the</strong> next, accord-<br />

10. He will summon : i.e. God will<br />

summon. In my text I took jesew'S<br />

as a misrendering <strong>of</strong> Porjaet, In that<br />

case we should render :<br />

' all <strong>the</strong> host<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavens shall cry out.' Cheru-<br />

bin, Seraphin, and Ophannin : cf<br />

14". 18 20' 71'. The Cherubim and<br />

Seraphim appear in <strong>the</strong> 0. T. but<br />

are carefully distinguished. Schulz,<br />

A. Tliche. Theol., p. 617, says that<br />

in no instance are <strong>the</strong> Cherubim to<br />

be regarded as angels, but as symbolic<br />

figures : <strong>the</strong>y form God's chariot, and<br />

are <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> revealing or concealing<br />

His presence. But this does not hold<br />

<strong>of</strong> later developments. In <strong>the</strong> present<br />

passage <strong>the</strong>y form an order <strong>of</strong> angels<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y do in Rev. 5'"i''- 2 Enoch 19«<br />

20'. The Seraphim are beings whose<br />

special diity was to serve in God's im-<br />

mediate presence. On <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se see also Delitzsch on Is. 6'. The<br />

Ophannim (i. e. wheels) are derived<br />

from Ezek. 1". In <strong>the</strong> Talmud as<br />

here <strong>the</strong>y are classed with <strong>the</strong> Cheru-<br />

bim and Seraphim, Weber, pp. 168,<br />

205. On <strong>the</strong> angelology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 0. T.<br />

see Schulz, A. Tliche. Tlteol. (606-<br />

622) ; Jeicish Encyc. in. loc. <strong>Angels</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> power, and all <strong>the</strong> angels <strong>of</strong> prin-<br />

cipalities. These are exactly St. Paul's<br />

'principalities and powers'; cf. Rom.<br />

8'8 Eph. 121 Col. 1". The o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

powers on <strong>the</strong> earth, &c., i. e. <strong>the</strong><br />

lower angel-powers over nature. 11.<br />

Glorify. + ' and praise ', P. Sxalt.<br />

> g. In <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> faith, &o.<br />

These words express <strong>the</strong> virtues which<br />

animate, <strong>the</strong> angels who give praise.<br />

The virtues are seven in number; cf.
