Sect. Il] Chapter LX. 3-8 115<br />
and for those who take His name in vain—that day is prepared,<br />
for <strong>the</strong> elect a covenant, but for sinners an inquisition.<br />
35. When <strong>the</strong> punishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits shall rest<br />
upon <strong>the</strong>m, it shall rest in order that <strong>the</strong> punishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits may not come in vain, and it shall slay <strong>the</strong><br />
children with <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong> children with <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
Afterwards <strong>the</strong> judgement shall take place according to His<br />
mercy and His patience.^<br />
7. And on that day were two monsters parted, a female<br />
monster named Leviathan, to dwell in <strong>the</strong> abysses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ocean<br />
over <strong>the</strong> fountains <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> waters. 8. But <strong>the</strong> male is named<br />
Behemoth, who occupied with his breast a waste wilderness<br />
named fDuidainf, on <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> garden where <strong>the</strong> elect and<br />

restored this verse immediately after<br />

A fragment dealing with oertaiu myths<br />
relating to <strong>the</strong> Oreatiou but not to <strong>the</strong><br />
Deluge. 7. This strange faucy<br />
about Behemoth and Leviathan, which<br />
are first mentioned in Job 40 41, is<br />
found by Jewish expounders also in<br />
Gen. 121 Pa. 5010 ig. 271. For later<br />
allusions see 4 Ezra 6"-52 2 Bar. 29''.<br />
Here <strong>the</strong>y are represented as huge<br />
monsters created on <strong>the</strong> fifth day <strong>of</strong><br />
Creation to be <strong>the</strong> food <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right-<br />
eous in Messianic times (cf. B. Bathra<br />

in 1 Enoch. For fur<strong>the</strong>r information<br />
see Weber, Jud. Theol. 202, 389,<br />

Bel. des Jadenthams, 271. The<br />
Talmudio view agrees with that <strong>of</strong><br />
4 Ezra and 2 Bar. so far as to make Behemoth<br />
food for <strong>the</strong> righteous. Foun-<br />

Probably in <strong>the</strong> longer<br />
forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name we have a duplica-<br />
tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> initial letters, and Dain or<br />
Dein was <strong>the</strong> older form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> word.<br />
From <strong>the</strong> statement that <strong>the</strong> place lies<br />
to <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> Eden, it seems clear, as<br />
Kohut (Jewish Eucyc. viii. 39) has<br />
pointed out, that <strong>the</strong> word is corrupt fur<br />
Nai5 or Nud ; cf ta. This is ' <strong>the</strong> land<br />
<strong>of</strong> Nod to <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> Eden ' (Gen. 4").<br />
On <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> garden, i. e. <strong>the</strong><br />
garden <strong>of</strong> Eden. The locality <strong>of</strong> Eden<br />
varies in <strong>the</strong> different sections : see<br />
notes on IS" 32^. 3 702-4 773. Here<br />
again <strong>the</strong> question arises : have we to<br />
do here with <strong>the</strong> earthly garden <strong>of</strong><br />
righteousness or with <strong>the</strong> heavenly ?<br />
or are <strong>the</strong>y after all identical ? See<br />
note on 32'. The garden, which-<br />
ever it is, is apparently empty in
