3. And a great trembling seized me^
'And fear took hold of me,
And my loins gave way,
And dissolved were my reins,
And I fell upon my face.
4. And Micliael sent another angel from among the holy ones
and he raised me up, and when he had raised me up my spirit
returned ; for I had not beea able to endure the look of this
host, and the commotion and the quaking of the heaven.
5. And Michael said unto me: 'Why art thou disquieted with
such a vision ? Until this day lasted the day of His mercy ;
and He hath been merciful and long-suffering towards those
who dwell on the earth. 6. And when the day, and the
power, and the punishment, and the judgement come, which the
Lord of Spirits hath prepared for those who worship not the
righteous law, and for those who deny the righteous judgement,
final Messianic judgement is difficult
though poBJible ;
but in the case of the
first judgement (i. e. the Flood) it is not
possible except through misconception.
Here again the hand of an ignorant
interpolator is disclosed. 3. Cf.

the addition of tamaswa = ' melted ' in
(3 in order to supply a verb to ' reins '.

angel. Michael is the chief arch-
angel : cf. 40*> ". The other angel is
appointed to a like duty with the angel
of peace in the Parables, and is actually
so named in 60**. 5. Michael (a).

omit the negative. In my edition of
1893 I restored this negative on various
grounds when u was as yet unknown.
If the negative is not original, then
the corruption may have originated in
the Hebrew. The text ~ TrpoaKvvovffL =
^inriE'^, which may be corrupt for
innB'' = ' pervert ',
' destroy '. This
gives an excellent sense. The right-
eous law. The text = 'the righteous
judgement' = plS DBE^tp, which, as
HaUvy {Jaurn. Asial. 367-369, 1867)
has shown, can mean either ' the right-
eous law' or 'the righteous judge-
ment'. This phrase occurs twice in
this verse, and I have translated it
in the first instance as ' the righteous
law ', and in the second as ' the right-
eous judgement'. With the three
clauses in this verse we might compare
4 Ezra 7='
' Videte et intellegite quern negastis,
Vel cui uon servistis,
Vel cuius diligentias sprevistis '.
If the negative is not original, and
my conjecture is right, the text would
run
' Who corrupt the righteous law
And deny the righteous judgement',
&c.
