out, that no manner <strong>of</strong> violence is found in <strong>the</strong>m till <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

death ? 11. " Never<strong>the</strong>less <strong>the</strong>y perished and became as though<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had not been, and <strong>the</strong>ir spirits descended into Sheol in<br />

cm. 1. Now, <strong>the</strong>refore, I swear to you, <strong>the</strong> righteous, by <strong>the</strong><br />

glory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great and Honoured and Mighty One in dominion,<br />

and by His greatness I swear to you,<br />

3. I know a mystery<br />

And have read <strong>the</strong> heavenly tablets.<br />

And have seen <strong>the</strong> holy <strong>book</strong>s,<br />

And have found written <strong>the</strong>rein and inscribed regarding<br />

<strong>the</strong>m:<br />

author. The life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wicked is<br />

fashioned by material and temporal<br />

aims only, and so all <strong>the</strong>ir desires iind<br />

satisfaction in this world ; but <strong>the</strong> life<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous, as is manifest from<br />

first to last, is moulded by spiritual and<br />

eternal aims. 9. See good days.<br />

So LXX <strong>of</strong> Ps. 34^*, which implies a<br />

slightly different reading. 10.<br />

How <strong>the</strong>ir end falls out (a). ' how<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir end is peace '- Again, as in<br />

ver. 5, <strong>the</strong> author concedes that <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is no outward distinction between <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous and <strong>the</strong> wicked in this life, but<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re is a religious and ethical dis-<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir death '. 11. The wicked rejoin<br />

this difference in character is <strong>of</strong> no advantage—<br />

<strong>the</strong> same lot awaits good and bad<br />

replying directly to <strong>the</strong> wicked, turns<br />

to <strong>the</strong> righteous, and solemnly assures<br />

<strong>the</strong>m that every good thing is in store<br />

Hence <strong>the</strong>y were not to regard <strong>the</strong><br />

and in <strong>the</strong> spiritual <strong>the</strong>ocracy established<br />

after <strong>the</strong> final judgement. The<br />

words here are vague and might apply
