<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dead might be separated.<br />
And such a division has been<br />
made (for) <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
righteous, in which <strong>the</strong>re is<br />
<strong>the</strong> bright spring <strong>of</strong> water.<br />
10. And such has been made<br />
for sinners when <strong>the</strong>y die and<br />
are buried in <strong>the</strong> earth and<br />
judgement has not been<br />
executed on <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>ir life-<br />
time. 11. Here <strong>the</strong>ir spirits<br />
shall be set apart in this great<br />
pain till <strong>the</strong> great day <strong>of</strong> judge-<br />
ment and punishment and<br />

sion is for <strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous<br />

' souls '. But <strong>the</strong> word nafs in E fre-<br />
quently means spirit as in IS^^ 69'^ 99',<br />
as well as in verses 11, 12, 13 <strong>of</strong> this<br />
chapter. Hence I have rendered it<br />

The bright spring <strong>of</strong> water. In E<br />
for ' bright' <strong>the</strong> text gives ' brightness'<br />
or 'light'. In <strong>the</strong> underworld, souls,<br />
according to <strong>the</strong> Greek Cults, Jewish,<br />
Hellenistic, and Christian literature,<br />
suffered from thirst : see Dieterich,<br />
Nelcyia, 97 sqq. In <strong>the</strong> Greek Hades<br />
<strong>the</strong>re was a spring <strong>of</strong> forgetfulness<br />
on <strong>the</strong> left, while on <strong>the</strong> right was<br />
<strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> memory—<strong>the</strong> cool water<br />
— if/vxp^" iiSaip, by <strong>the</strong> drinking <strong>of</strong><br />
which consciousness and memory were<br />

ture in <strong>the</strong> Adapa Myth and <strong>the</strong><br />

10-11. The second division is for those<br />
sinners who lived prosperously and<br />
escaped punishment in life, and finally<br />
attained to honourable burial. Accord-<br />
ing to Hebrew and Greek idaas <strong>the</strong><br />
privation <strong>of</strong> funeral rites was a great<br />
calamity, and involved, at least accord-<br />
ing to ancient ideas, inevitable suffer-<br />
ing for <strong>the</strong> departed soul. 10.<br />
