Tlie Book of Enoch [Sect. T
[And appear from His camp]
And appear in the strength of His might from the heaven
'^of heavens"'.
And all shall be smitten with fear,
And the Watchers shall quake,
And great fear and trembling shall seize them unto the
ends of the earth.
And the high mountains shall be shaken,
And the high hills shall be made low,
as ruler controls the immeasurable dura-
tion of the worlil '. Against this view
we might ^et the fact that E renders
u jSaafAfis Tov aiwvoi as u I3aai\(v^ a
a'luivws (see above), and that in 15' in
G^ TOV alwvos can only mean ' eternal'
in TOV oiipavov t^v vipr^Xov , . . tov
aiaifos. But the words which I have
rendered ' tlie eternal God ' could also
be rendered 'Rod of the world'' of.
58< SI'" 82' 842 : also 123 gp.
Will tread upon the earth. So
G. From Mio. 1' pS . . . i^y im.
Here for eiri r^r yfjv E reads corruptly
iKfidfv. Sinai, whence the Law was
given, will likewise be the place of
future judgement. Cf. Deut. 33'
Ps. eS^'. [And appear from His
camp]. So G*. This I have bracketed
as an addition. It is against the
parallelism. It is also against the
sense. In 3'' it is already said that ' the
Holy One will come forth from His
dwelling ', and the writer has gone on
to speak of God's advent on Sinai. E,
it is true, reads ' And appear with His
hosts '. But if G^ originally read kv ttj
nap(v0o\7j it is wholly improbable that
a scribe would change it into in t^s
napiv^oKrjs against the context. 5-9.
Din. thinks that we have in 5-9 a
description combining the two great
judgements ; but everything froni verse i
to end is perfectly applicable to the final
judgement. Yet cf 83'. 5. The
"Watchers. These are the D'"'!''!? first
mentioned in Dan. 4'''> ">'''' (in Hebrew
text) 2 Enoch 18^. This name belongs
to the fallen angels here and in lO"'
36 X2* IS'" lib
In 12'.
3 152 161, 2 9116.
=1 20^ 3912. " 402 6112 71'
it designates the archangels. And
the 'Watchers shall quake. So E.
But G^ has here 'And the w.itchers
shall f believe ' (i.e. maTdaovaiv). This
change seems due to the scribe who
added the following words :
' And they shall sing hidden things in
the ends of the (word omitted)
And all tlie ends of the earth shall be
shaken.'
The scribe seems to have been thinking
of 2 Eaoch 18 where the singing of the
Watchers is mentioned. But the text
of E is right and gives a sense wliich
accords perfectly with lO^'-n Fear
and trembling. So E. G^ trans.
' trembling and fear '. The order of E
is probably original. Cf. Job 4'* Ps.
2" Mk. 6S3 2 Cor. 7^^ Eph. &. Yet
the order here in G^ recurs inG^in 13'.
6. Cf. Judges 56 Ps. 97= Is. 6Jb '
Mic. 1* Hab. 3« Judith 16'^ Assumpt.
Moyseos 10*. Shaken. + ' shall fall
and be dissolved' G^ {-niaovvTai koX
iiaKve-qctovTai). But this addition of
G^ is against the parallelism. Made
low. + ' so that the mountains shall
waste away ' G^ {tov 5ta(^fiypvijj/ai oprf)^
Another impossible interpolation.
