24 The Booh <strong>of</strong> Enoch [Sect. I<br />

' Proceed against <strong>the</strong> bastards and <strong>the</strong> reprobates, and against<br />

<strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> fornication :<br />

and destroy [<strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> fornica-<br />

tion and] <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Watchers from amongst men :<br />

cause <strong>the</strong>m to go forth] :<br />

[and<br />

send <strong>the</strong>m one against <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may destroy each o<strong>the</strong>r in battle : for length <strong>of</strong> days shall<br />

<strong>the</strong>jr not have. 10. And no request that <strong>the</strong>y (i. e. <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>rs) make <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>e shall be granted unto <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir behalf j for <strong>the</strong>y hojDe to live au eternal life, and that each<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m will live five hundred years.' 11. And <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

said unto Michael :<br />

' Go, bind Semjiiza and his associates who<br />

have united <strong>the</strong>mselves with women so as to have defiled <strong>the</strong>m-<br />

selves with <strong>the</strong>m in all <strong>the</strong>ir uncleanness. 12. And, when<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir sons have slain one ano<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong>y have seen <strong>the</strong><br />

destruction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir beloved ones, bind <strong>the</strong>m fast for seventy<br />

generations in <strong>the</strong> valleys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth, till <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

earth, and <strong>the</strong>ir power <strong>of</strong> hurting <strong>the</strong><br />

earth is at an end ; cf. 14'. But tliis<br />

is not BO with <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> giants.<br />

They enjoy an impunity in wrong-doing<br />

till <strong>the</strong> final judgement: see 15"-16'.<br />

9. [The children <strong>of</strong> fornication<br />

and.] > G'5'. This is a dittograph<br />

from <strong>the</strong> preceding clause in E. It is<br />

against <strong>the</strong> context also. 'The children<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Watchers' is sufiicient: this<br />

phrase includes <strong>the</strong> three classes in <strong>the</strong><br />

preceding clause. [And cause <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to go forth.] A duplicate rendering<br />

in E <strong>of</strong> iriii^ov. One against <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r (E G'). > Ge. That <strong>the</strong>y may<br />

destroy each o<strong>the</strong>r in battle (E).<br />

This is not » paraphrastic rendering <strong>of</strong><br />

G' iv TroXijiw, since G' has iv iroXe/xai ical<br />

ev dirajKua., The original was probably<br />

KniD aip = ' a deadly war ' or ' a war <strong>of</strong><br />

extermination '. Cf. Jub. 5". 10. An<br />

eternal life = 500 years. Touching<br />

<strong>the</strong> prayer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angels cf. 12" 13*"'<br />

14'. 11. The Lord (E). > G^'.<br />

Bind (i.e. SrjaovG'). G^E read SrjXa-<br />

aov, a corruption native to G^ ; for <strong>the</strong><br />

original aco. fiiyivTas remains un-<br />

changed, though <strong>of</strong> course SiiKwaov<br />

would require luyttai. United<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves . , defiled <strong>the</strong>m-<br />

selves with <strong>the</strong>m. Quoted verbally<br />

in Jub. 422. 12. Their sons. So<br />

G^' 01 vloi avTuiv. E reads ' all <strong>the</strong>se<br />

sons', but kuellft = 'all' is an in-<br />

ternal corruption for 'gUii = 01 here.<br />

Slain one ano<strong>the</strong>r. Cf. 12' 14'<br />

Jub. 59. Valleys (i-aTras G*'). E<br />

reads<br />

' hills '. vairai is used as a render-<br />

ing <strong>of</strong> nWJ in Is. 4012 Ezek. 6^. This<br />

fact and <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek<br />

myth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Titans may explain how<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ethiopic translator attached this<br />

meaning to t. That vanai means<br />

valleys in this passage is beyond <strong>the</strong><br />

possibility <strong>of</strong> doubt. In 67* "^' this<br />

valley (not valleys) in which <strong>the</strong> fallen<br />

angels are cast is dealt with at length.<br />

Jub. 5"i, which is here dependent on<br />

our text, writes : After this <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

bound in <strong>the</strong> depths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth for<br />

ever until <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great con-<br />

demnation.' This verse is referred to<br />
