Sect. IV] Chapter XG. 38-42 217
its head ; and the Lord of the sheep rejoiced over it and over all
the oxen. 39. And I slept in their midst : and I awoke and
saw everything. 40. This is the vision which I saw while
I slept, and I awoke and blessed the Lord o£ righteousness and
gave Him glory, 41. Then I wept with a great weeping,
and my tears stayed not till I could no longer endure it : when
I saw, they flowed on account of what I had seen ; for everything
shall come and be fulfilled, and all the deeds of men in their order
were shown to me. 43. On that night I remembered the first
dream, and because of it I wept and was troubled—because I had
seen that vision.'
epithet ' black ' here. It seems wrong.
Over jt. All MSS. read ' over them',
but I have emended with Beer. But
possibly the following ' and ' is an
intrusion. In that case we should
simply render ' over all the oxen '.
Though nothing is said as to the dura-
tion of the life of the individual in this
section, the implication is that it is
eternal. If Enoch and Elijah are
transferred to the Messianic kingdom
from Paradise, surely it is only reason-
able to conclude that the new form of
existence is an eternal one ; for this
new form of existence is more glorious
than that enjoyed by Enoch and Elijah
in Paradise. In Paradise Elijah was
symbolized by a ram, but in the Mes-
sianic kingdom by a hull. 40.
Cf. 22". 41, 42. Enoch weeps
because of the woes that threaten
mankind in his two visions.
