Sect. V] Chapters XCVJII. U—XCIX. 7 245<br />

And place <strong>the</strong>m as a testimony before <strong>the</strong> angels^<br />

That <strong>the</strong>y may place <strong>the</strong> sin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sinners for a memorial<br />

before <strong>the</strong> Most High.<br />

4. In those days <strong>the</strong> nations shall be stirred up,<br />

And <strong>the</strong> families <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nations shall arise on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong><br />

destruction.<br />

5. And in those days <strong>the</strong> destitute shall go forth and carry <strong>of</strong>f<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir children,<br />

And <strong>the</strong>y shall abandon <strong>the</strong>m, so that <strong>the</strong>ir children shall<br />

perish through <strong>the</strong>m<br />

:<br />

Yea, <strong>the</strong>y shall abandon <strong>the</strong>ir children (that are still)<br />

sucklings, and not return to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

And shall have no pity on <strong>the</strong>ir beloved ones.<br />

6. And again I swear to you, ye sinners, that sin is prepared<br />

for a day <strong>of</strong> unceasing bloodshed. 7. And <strong>the</strong>y who worship<br />

stones, and grave images <strong>of</strong> gold and silver and wood (and stone)<br />

Place <strong>the</strong>m (a. ' ye have placed<br />

<strong>the</strong>m') . . . before <strong>the</strong> angels. This<br />

mediatorial function <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angels (cf.<br />

9^!-" note) has its root in <strong>the</strong> O.T.,<br />

cf. Job 51 3323 Zeoh. V but has no<br />

place in <strong>the</strong> N. T., except in Rev. 8'i *.<br />

See my note on <strong>the</strong> mediation <strong>of</strong> angels<br />

in T. Lev. 3= T. Dan. 6^ The Most<br />

High. This title is found in all Sections<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>. The title ' Most<br />

High' appears in 9^ 10' 46' 60'. ^^ 62'<br />

In <strong>the</strong> last times <strong>the</strong>re will be wars<br />

and tumults among <strong>the</strong> nations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

earth. This will be <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

results <strong>of</strong> famine are here depicted.<br />

There is no reference to miscarriages<br />

in <strong>the</strong> verse, as has generally been sup-<br />

posed and so rendered : nor to rending<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir children in pieces, as has been<br />

universally supposed and translated.<br />

Abandon <strong>the</strong>m (a). iS ' abandon <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> idolatry and superstition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

wicked. In this denunciation not only<br />

<strong>the</strong> apostates but also <strong>the</strong> actual<br />

hea<strong>the</strong>n are included. 6. Day <strong>of</strong><br />

unceasing bloodshed, i. e. <strong>the</strong> judgement<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sword ; see 91'* (note)<br />

' impenitentia ' = ajieravorjaia, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong> word ' sin ' in our text may be a loose<br />

rendering. 7. Grave images <strong>of</strong><br />
