shows Ishmael <strong>the</strong> glorious future Jerusalem (1 En. 89^'), where<br />

<strong>the</strong> souls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous stand praying for its advent upon<br />

earth (1 En. 97^. ^ ggs, le io43).<br />

The date o£ this work cannot be later than <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Babylonian Talmud. An apocalyptic frag-<br />

ment (dealt with in Jewish Enci/c. i. 678, 679), apparently<br />

written under <strong>the</strong> immediate impression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hadrianic per-<br />

secution, seems to supply <strong>the</strong> hnk which connects 2 Enoch with<br />

this Neo-Hebrew Book <strong>of</strong> Enoch, which itself must be dated<br />

earlier than Talmud Berachoth 7 a which quotes from it.^<br />
