<strong>the</strong> final judgement at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> temporary Messianic kirigt<br />

dom. Fur<strong>the</strong>r evidence to this effect is to be found in 92^' *,<br />

where <strong>the</strong> righteous are said to 'walk in eternal light'; in 104'',<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y are to become ' companions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hosts <strong>of</strong> heaven ' ; in<br />

104^, where <strong>the</strong>y are to 'shine as <strong>the</strong> lights', and have '<strong>the</strong> portals<br />

<strong>of</strong> heaven open to <strong>the</strong>m '. These statements could not possibly<br />

apply to <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> temporary Messianib kingdom, (4)<br />

There is only a resurrection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous in 91-104; <strong>of</strong>. QV-^<br />

92^ 100^: whereas in 22 a general resurrection with <strong>the</strong> exception<br />

<strong>of</strong> one class <strong>of</strong> sinners is taught. (5) There is no resurrection <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> body in 91-104: <strong>the</strong>re is a resurrection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body in 1-36.<br />

(6) Contrast <strong>the</strong> spiritual nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom in 91-104 with<br />

<strong>the</strong> crass materialism <strong>of</strong> 1-36, where much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bliss consists in<br />

good eating and drinking and <strong>the</strong> begetting <strong>of</strong> large families, and<br />

life itself depends on <strong>the</strong> external eating <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

(7) Finally, contrast <strong>the</strong> answers given by 1-36 and 91-104 to<br />

<strong>the</strong> question, • why do <strong>the</strong> righteous suffer ? ' See pp. 3 sq., 222 sq.<br />

The lines <strong>of</strong> thought, <strong>the</strong>n, being so divergent in <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

sections, <strong>the</strong>re is no conclusion open to us o<strong>the</strong>r than that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

proceed from different authors ; whereas <strong>the</strong> obvious points <strong>of</strong><br />

agreement necessitate <strong>the</strong> assumption that one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two authors<br />

had <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r before him, and we need feel no hesita-<br />

tion in concluding that <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> 91-104 had 1-36 or some<br />

form <strong>of</strong> this section before him—some form <strong>of</strong> tliis section we repeat,<br />

for it is at <strong>the</strong> best fragmentary.<br />

B. (6) Relation <strong>of</strong> 91-104 to 83-90. There are some points<br />

<strong>of</strong> resemblance between <strong>the</strong>se sections. (1) Elijah's translation<br />

is referred to, 93^* i^-'"^. God rejoices over <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

wicked, 94" 8958_ (2) Titles <strong>of</strong> God in common: 'The Great<br />

King,' gP'' 84«; ' <strong>the</strong> Holy and Great One,' 92^ (note) 84i-<br />

But <strong>the</strong>se and o<strong>the</strong>r superficial points <strong>of</strong> resemblance are far<br />

outweighed by <strong>the</strong> divergent lines <strong>of</strong> thought pursued in <strong>the</strong> two<br />

sections, which render <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> one and undivided authorship<br />

impossible. "We should observe <strong>the</strong>n, that— (1) <strong>the</strong> Messianic<br />

kingdom is finite in duration in 91-104, i.e. from <strong>the</strong> eighth to<br />

<strong>the</strong> tenth world-week inclusive; whereas in 83-90 it is eternal..<br />

In 91-104 <strong>the</strong> final judgement takes place at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Messianic kingdom; in 83-90 it is consummated at <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messianic kingdom. (2) There is a resurrection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous only in 91-104; but in 83-90 a resurrection <strong>of</strong> apostate<br />

Jews also. (3) The period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sword is differently dated and
