98 Tlie Booh <strong>of</strong> Enoch [Sect. II<br />

And forgo <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hands.<br />

3. They shall have no honour through <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong><br />

SpirifcSj<br />

Yet through His name shall <strong>the</strong>y be saved,<br />

And <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits will have compassion on <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

For His compassion is great.<br />

4. And He is righteous also in His judgement.<br />

And in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> His glory unrighteousness also shall<br />

not maintain itself<br />

:<br />

At His judgement <strong>the</strong> unrepentant shall perish before Him.<br />

5. And from henceforth I will have no mercy on <strong>the</strong>m, saith<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Spirits.<br />

The Uesurrection <strong>of</strong><br />

tJie Bead, mid <strong>the</strong> Separation ly <strong>the</strong> Judge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bighteous and <strong>the</strong> Wicked.<br />

LI. 1. And in those days shall <strong>the</strong> earth also give back that<br />

which has been entrusted to it.<br />

will be saved as by fire. They will<br />

not have <strong>the</strong> abundant entering in <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Jews. Through <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong><br />

(a), i! 2/3 'before'. 4, 5. When <strong>the</strong><br />

hour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> final judgement arrives,<br />

<strong>the</strong> season <strong>of</strong> mercy for <strong>the</strong> Gentiles is<br />

past for ever. Note <strong>the</strong> aflinities <strong>of</strong><br />

thought between SO^"^ and Q^^ ^5.<br />

Cf. 4 Ezra 7=^ 2 Bar. SS^^. Observe<br />

that <strong>the</strong> final judgement here is not at<br />

<strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messianic reign<br />

as in <strong>the</strong> Parables, but apparently<br />

at its close, as in 91-104. In 4 Ezra<br />

and 2 Bar., where <strong>the</strong> Messianic<br />

kingdom is <strong>of</strong> temporary duration,<br />

and brought to a close by <strong>the</strong> final<br />

judgement, a peiiod <strong>of</strong> repentance is<br />

rightly spoken <strong>of</strong>. Cf. 2 Bar. 8512<br />

4 Ezra 7=*.<br />

LI. 1. The resurrection here is a<br />

resurrection <strong>of</strong> all Israel but not <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Gentiles. 51' would indeed seem<br />

to point to <strong>the</strong> latter, and this all <strong>the</strong><br />

more so, as 4 Ezra 7^" and 7^' which<br />

are evidently based on it, and on<br />

1 En. 60°, are applied to a general re-<br />

surrection. But <strong>the</strong> whole history <strong>of</strong><br />

Jewish thought points in an opposite<br />

direction. As we shall see below,<br />

no Jewish <strong>book</strong>s except <strong>the</strong> T.<br />

Benj. 10*~* and 4 Ezi'a teach indubit-<br />

ably <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> a general resur-<br />

rection, Individual utterances to<br />

<strong>the</strong> contrary in <strong>the</strong> Talmud will<br />

be noticed below. On <strong>the</strong> question<br />
