comely daughters. 2. And <strong>the</strong> angels, <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
found in Enoch. Ano<strong>the</strong>r fragment <strong>of</strong><br />
this Apocalypse is preserved by Syn-<br />
cellus in <strong>the</strong> Greek ; but to this <strong>the</strong>re<br />
is no corresponding text in <strong>the</strong> Ethiopio.<br />
But <strong>the</strong>se myths were already combined<br />
in <strong>the</strong>ir present form, when 88-89'<br />
were written. But not only does 10'"'<br />
belong to <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Noah but 6-11<br />
as a whole. These never refer to Enoch<br />
but to Noah 10'. Moreover, when <strong>the</strong><br />
author <strong>of</strong> Jubilees is clearly drawing on<br />
<strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Noah, his subject matter<br />
^21-26 agrees closely with that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>te<br />
chapters in Enoch (see Charles's edition<br />
<strong>of</strong> Jubilees, pp. Ixxi sq., 61, 264).<br />

VI. 2. Children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heaven.<br />
Cf. 13" 14' 39'. See 15'-'. Of. 'Sons <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> holy angels ', 71'. The entire myth<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> angels and <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> men<br />
in Enoch springs originally from Gen.<br />
6'"*, where it is said that '<strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong><br />
God came in to <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> men '.<br />
These words are not to be taken as ex-<br />
pressing alliances between <strong>the</strong> Sethites<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Cainites, but as belonging to a<br />
very early myth, possibly <strong>of</strong> Persian<br />
origin, to <strong>the</strong> effect that demons had<br />
corrupted <strong>the</strong> earth before <strong>the</strong> coming<br />
<strong>of</strong> Zoroaster and had allied <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
with women. See Delitzsch, Neuer<br />
Commentar uher d. Genesis, 1887, pp.<br />

Gunkel, Genesis 56. The LXX originally<br />
rendered <strong>the</strong> words ' sons <strong>of</strong> God<br />
by a-yyfXoi toS etoC, and this rendering<br />
is found in Philo, de Giganiibus, Euse-<br />
bius, Augustine, and Ambrose. This<br />
view <strong>of</strong> Gen. 6'"* was held by most <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> early fa<strong>the</strong>rs. That this was <strong>the</strong><br />
original meaning <strong>of</strong> Gen. 6'"* Is. 24^'<br />
is now generally admitted. For a<br />
history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interpretation <strong>of</strong> this<br />
passage in Jewish and Christian writers<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Noah, relating not to <strong>the</strong><br />

have belonged to it. Fragment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
